What is GLP-1 (the Hormone)?
GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1, is a hormone naturally released by the intestines in response to eating. It helps manage blood sugar levels, appetite, and digestion. Here’s how it works:
Regulates Blood Sugar:
GLP-1 assists the pancreas in releasing insulin, which moves glucose from the bloodstream into cells for energy, and reduces glucagon, a hormone that signals the liver to release sugar into the bloodstream¹.
Slows Digestion:
GLP-1 slows down gastric emptying, meaning food stays in your stomach longer, which helps you feel fuller for extended periods².
Curbs Appetite:
By signaling the brain to increase feelings of fullness after eating, GLP-1 reduces appetite, making it easier to control portion sizes and avoid overeating³.
How Do GLP-1 Medications Work?
GLP-1 medications, also known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, mimic the actions of the natural GLP-1 hormone. Common GLP-1 medications include semaglutide (Ozempic®) and tirzepatide (Zepbound®), which have been effective in managing weight and metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes⁴. These medications work by extending the sensation of fullness and reducing cravings, providing a more sustainable approach to weight management⁵.
Am I a Candidate for GLP-1 Medications?
Your eligibility for GLP-1 therapy depends on various factors, which your Measured provider will review to create a personalized treatment plan. You may be a good candidate if:
You’re between 21 and 65 years old.
You have a BMI (Body Mass Index) over 30.
You have a BMI over 27 and a weight-related health condition, like hypertension or sleep apnea⁶.
At Measured, our Care Team is here to help you explore whether GLP-1s are right for you. We’re committed to guiding you through every step of your weight loss journey with the right support and information.
Dosing and Administration
Both medications are administered as once-weekly subcutaneous injections, but dosing schedules may vary based on individual needs⁵. Your Measured provider will tailor the dosage to suit your health profile and treatment objectives.
Why Consider Compounded GLP-1 Medications?
Due to recent nationwide shortages of brand-name GLP-1 medications, compounded alternatives have become an essential option for many patients⁷. Compounded GLP-1s, produced by specialized pharmacies, contain the same active ingredients as the branded versions, offering a safe and effective alternative when standard medications are in short supply⁸. At Measured, we ensure compounded medications are prepared with the highest standards to meet each patient’s health needs.
