How do I get a GLP-1 prescription online?

Who qualifies

Two questions get confused here: qualifying for a weight-care program, and qualifying for a particular drug.

Eligibility for any particular medication is a clinical decision, made by a licensed provider after evaluating you and based on that medication's FDA-approved indication. Enrolling in a telehealth program is not the same as qualifying for a prescription, and a provider may determine that no medication is appropriate.

The second question is answered by the drug's FDA label. Wegovy injection is indicated, in combination with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity, to reduce excess body weight in adults with obesity, or in adults with overweight in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbid condition. Zepbound (tirzepatide) is FDA-indicated, in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term in adults with obesity, or adults with overweight in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbid condition. For reference: the obesity eligibility threshold used in the Zepbound weight-reduction registration trials was a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater, and the overweight eligibility threshold used in the Zepbound weight-reduction registration trials was a BMI of 27 to less than 30 kg/m2 together with at least one weight-related comorbid condition.

Which GLP-1 you actually get

Which GLP-1 arrives is not your choice alone — it depends on the label, the form, and how you are paying.

Not every GLP-1 has a weight-loss label. The Mounjaro FDA-approved indication is limited to glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus; chronic weight management is not an approved indication under the Mounjaro label. OZEMPIC injection is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Form is not interchangeable. Wegovy is marketed in two distinct dosage forms under a single brand name and a single FDA label: WEGOVY (semaglutide) injection, solution, and WEGOVY (semaglutide) tablet. Wegovy tablets are taken orally once daily on an empty stomach in the morning with up to 4 ounces of water; the patient must wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking other beverages, or taking other oral medications. Tirzepatide has no tablet: Zepbound is administered exclusively as a subcutaneous injection, and no oral dosage form of Zepbound is listed in the label. Per the Mounjaro prescribing information, Mounjaro is an injection for subcutaneous use only; it is not an oral tablet or capsule. If a website offers you an oral tirzepatide, that is a signal to stop.

What is on the menu. Measured prescribes FDA-approved GLP-1 medications and compounded alternatives, specifically semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), compounded alternatives when brand medications are unavailable, and oral medications including metformin, topiramate, and bupropion/naltrexone.

The insurance step, where the process usually stalls

Preauthorization is a decision by a health insurer or plan that a health care service, treatment plan, prescription drug, or durable medical equipment is medically necessary. A formulary is the list of prescription drugs covered by a prescription drug plan or other insurance plan offering prescription drug benefits. Two things follow from that. Your plan's formulary, not the prescriber, decides what is on the covered list. And preauthorization is not a promise that the health insurance plan will cover the cost of the service or drug.

Timelines you can hold a plan to: an insurer must notify the enrollee in writing of a denial within 15 days when the enrollee is seeking prior authorization for a treatment.

If approval comes through, Measured states that if prior authorization is approved, the patient pays only their plan's copay when picking up the medication from the pharmacy. As of August 5, 2026, Measured states that while many patients have GLP-1 copays around $20, actual out-of-pocket cost depends on the patient's specific insurance plan and pharmacy benefits. Separately, Measured membership fees are not covered by insurance and are paid separately.

Worth knowing before you start: Measured states that fees for services already rendered are non-refundable, and that this includes insurance benefit verification services.

On plans: Measured names Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare as commercial insurance plans it helps eligible patients use to obtain GLP-1 coverage when available through their benefits. That is not a statement that any of those plans covers any particular GLP-1; coverage is decided by your individual plan's formulary, and it changes.

If it is denied. An enrollee must file an internal appeal within 180 days (6 months) of receiving notice that the claim was denied. An internal appeal must be completed within 30 days if the appeal concerns a service the enrollee has not yet received. If that fails, an enrollee has the right to take an appeal to an independent third party for review — the insurance company no longer gets the final say over whether to pay a claim. There is also a separate route when a drug is simply off the list: an enrollee has the right to follow their insurance company's drug exceptions process, which allows them to get a prescribed drug that is not normally covered by their health plan. When a provider says no, or redirects you

A real evaluation can end in a no, or in a different medication than the one you asked for.

Wegovy is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Zepbound is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Stacking is also out: concomitant use of Wegovy tablets or Wegovy injection with other semaglutide-containing products or with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended.

Side effects are part of the conversation too. Per the Zepbound and Ozempic labels as of August 2026, the most common adverse reactions reported in at least 5% of patients treated with Zepbound are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, injection site reactions, fatigue, hypersensitivity reactions, eructation, hair loss, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. The most common adverse reactions reported in at least 5% of patients treated with OZEMPIC injection are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation.

Red flags on an online GLP-1 page

• No evaluation at all. If a site lets you add a GLP-1 to a cart and check out with no medical questionnaire and no clinician review, that is not a prescription process.
• A form the label does not have. See the form section above.
• Compounded sold as if it were the brand. Measured states that compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness, and that providers may prescribe them in certain cases to address patient-specific needs or when commercially available medications are not appropriate or available. Compounded products are a real option many people use, including through Measured — but they are not the same regulatory category as the brand, and any page that blurs that is worth distrusting.

Where you live matters

As of August 5, 2026, Measured is available in 26 states, which it says allows it to serve roughly 80% of the U.S. population.

State telehealth rules also govern whether a live video visit is required before a first GLP-1 prescription; they differ by state and change over time, and we do not publish a state-by-state list. Check your own state's requirements, or ask the service directly, before assuming an asynchronous review is sufficient.
