What is food noise?
Food noise is an informal term for a preoccupation with food that can feel persistent, intrusive, and unwanted, not a medical diagnosis. It became popular on social media alongside discussion of GLP-1 medications. Researchers say little is yet known about what causes it or how it works.
What do people mean by food noise?
Food noise is not a medical diagnosis. It is an informal term that emerged to describe a preoccupation with food that can feel persistent, intrusive, and unwanted, and it became popular on social media platforms such as TikTok and Reddit, typically discussed alongside GLP-1 receptor agonist medications [1]. In interviews with 30 patients taking GLP-1 medications, a reduction in food noise, psychological hunger, or appetite was one of the first themes researchers identified [2].
What does research know about food noise, and what doesn't it know yet?
A 2023 review linked food noise to food cue reactivity and noted anecdotal reports that patients on GLP-1 medications experience less rumination and obsessive preoccupation about food [3]. A 2026 theoretical review says little is known about what food noise actually is, what causes it, or how it might be addressed, and lists five candidate explanations, including food cue reactivity, food addiction, and thought suppression [1]. A separate 2026 paper concludes that evidence for its underlying mechanisms is limited and that more clarity is needed before the term is used in clinical care [4].
