Tapering

What is tapering off GLP-1?
Tapering refers to gradually reducing a medication's dose before stopping it altogether, rather than stopping all at once. Neither the Wegovy nor the Zepbound label uses the word "taper" or "tapering," and neither gives a step-down schedule for stopping. A 2026 review notes that tapering strategies for stopping GLP-1 treatment have not been validated.
Do GLP-1 labels give a tapering schedule?
Neither the Wegovy nor the Zepbound prescribing information uses the word "taper" or "tapering," and neither lays out a step-down schedule for stopping treatment [1][2]. A 2026 narrative review on GLP-1 discontinuation suggests structured follow-up after stopping "in the absence of validated tapering strategies" [3]. The same review reports that stopping is "associated with substantial weight regain" [3].
Is there evidence on stepping down the dose?
The closest evidence is about continuing at a lower frequency, not stopping. A small retrospective case series followed 30 adults who had reached a weight plateau on weekly semaglutide or tirzepatide and were moved to reduced-frequency dosing at their existing dose, averaging 36.3 weeks on the new schedule [4]. Average weight went from 74.1 kg at plateau to 72.4 kg [4]. These patients stayed on treatment, dosing less often, and the authors describe this reduced-frequency maintenance as "a promising strategy" [4]. The abstract describes no comparison group [4].
Frequently asked questions
Is there a standard schedule for tapering off a GLP-1 medication?+−
No. Neither the Wegovy nor Zepbound label gives one, and a 2026 review describes the field as lacking validated tapering strategies.
Does any study show people can taper off and stop successfully?+−
Not in the sources here. The one small case series moved 30 adults to less frequent dosing at their existing dose and kept them on treatment; it did not study stopping.
