Can you take NAD+ with resveratrol?

NAD+ and resveratrol refers to pairing an NAD+-boosting supplement or injection with resveratrol, a plant compound studied as an activator of sirtuin enzymes that require NAD+ to function. Neither is a peptide. The one trial found in our search that tested the combination reported resveratrol added no benefit over an NAD+ precursor alone.

Why are NAD+ and resveratrol taken together?

Sirtuins are a family of enzymes that each require NAD+ as a co-substrate for their catalytic activity, and the search for a way to mimic calorie restriction's effect on sirtuin activity led researchers to resveratrol, a stilbenoid compound [1]. Resveratrol and other sirtuin-activating compounds have been studied for their effect on health and lifespan in various species, including in human clinical studies [1].

What did the trial that tested them together find?

A 2024 trial in 90 people with peripheral artery disease tested nicotinamide riboside, an NAD+ precursor, with and without resveratrol over six months. NR alone improved six-minute walking distance by 7.0 meters versus a 10.6-meter decline on placebo; among participants who took at least 75% of their pills, NR improved walking by 31.0 meters and NR plus resveratrol improved it by 26.9 meters [2]. The trial's authors concluded resveratrol did not add benefit to NR alone, and called for a larger trial to confirm the finding [2].

Are NAD+ and resveratrol FDA-approved or regulated as peptides?

Neither is a peptide: NAD+ is a coenzyme and resveratrol is a plant polyphenol. Neither is FDA-approved as a drug; both sit in FDA's Category 1 compounding list, meaning they were nominated with enough supporting information for evaluation and do not appear on FDA's Category 2 or Category 3 lists [4]. A separate 60-day trial of an NMN supplement found blood NAD+ concentrations rose significantly in every treated group and reported the supplement was well tolerated [3].
