What is Ozempic face?

Ozempic face is an informal term for the deflated, prematurely aged look some people notice in their face after rapid weight loss, not a medical diagnosis. It describes facial volume loss that follows quick weight loss, seen with semaglutide and other GLP-1 medications. Whether it is a distinct side effect, rather than ordinary facial fat loss, is an open question.

What does the term "Ozempic face" mean?

A 2024 dermatology paper calls Ozempic face a "Social Media Phenomenon" and describes the term as "a new purported side effect, used to describe the rapid facial weight loss leaving a distorted facial appearance" [1]. One paper frames the open question directly: is this a new adverse effect, or simply what natural, rapid weight loss looks like on the face [1]? A systematic review describes the term as covering "exaggerated volume loss" from semaglutide therapy [3].

What does the evidence show?

A retrospective study of twenty patients measured facial change after weight loss on GLP-1 medications: average weight loss was 11.0 kg, and median total midfacial volume decrease was 9.0%, with a loss of about 7% facial volume for every 10 kg lost, mostly from superficial fat pads [2]. The authors called it one of the first quantitative assessments of the phenomenon [2]. A separate systematic review of 23 articles describes itself as "limited by study biases" [3].
