What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is an FDA-approved semaglutide brand sold as both a weekly injection and a daily tablet under one label. Both forms are indicated, with diet and exercise, to reduce excess body weight in adults with obesity or overweight plus a weight-related condition, and to reduce cardiovascular risk in adults with established heart disease.

What forms does Wegovy come in?

Wegovy is marketed under a single FDA label as two distinct dosage forms: a once-weekly subcutaneous injection and a once-daily oral tablet, and prescribers must specify which form they intend [1]. The injection is supplied in single-dose pens and syringes across several strengths, while the tablet comes in 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, and 25 mg strengths and must be swallowed whole [1]. Concomitant use of Wegovy with other semaglutide products or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended [1].

What is Wegovy approved to treat?

Both Wegovy forms are indicated, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, to reduce excess body weight in adults with obesity, or with overweight plus at least one weight-related condition [1]. Both forms are also indicated to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight [1]. The injection alone carries two additional indications: pediatric weight reduction for ages 12 and up, and treatment of noncirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis under accelerated approval [1].

How well does Wegovy work in clinical trials?

In the STEP 1 trial of 1,961 adults with overweight or obesity, mean body weight fell 14.9% with Wegovy 2.4 mg by week 68, versus 2.4% with placebo [2]. In SELECT, a cardiovascular-outcomes trial of 17,604 adults with cardiovascular disease, the combined rate of cardiovascular death, heart attack, or stroke was 6.5% with Wegovy versus 8.0% with placebo [3].
