What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is an FDA-approved weekly semaglutide injection indicated for adults with type 2 diabetes, used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control. It also carries indications to reduce cardiovascular risk and to slow chronic kidney disease progression in adults with type 2 diabetes and existing heart or kidney disease.

What is Ozempic indicated for?

Ozempic injection is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes [1]. It's also indicated to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of sustained kidney function decline, end-stage kidney disease, and cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease [1]. All three indications apply to adults only [1].

How is Ozempic dosed?

Ozempic injection starts at 0.25 mg once weekly [1]. After 4 weeks, the dosage increases to 0.5 mg weekly, and may rise further to 1 mg and then 2 mg weekly if more glycemic control is needed, with 2 mg as the maximum recommended dosage [1]. It's injected subcutaneously in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm [1].

Is there an oral version of Ozempic?

Yes: a second dosage form, an Ozempic oral tablet, is published on DailyMed under a label shared with Rybelsus [2]. The Ozempic tablet is taken orally once daily and comes in 1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg strengths, which differ from Rybelsus's 3 mg, 7 mg, and 14 mg strengths on that same label, so the two brands aren't interchangeable milligram-for-milligram [2]. See Rybelsus for the other brand on that label.
