What is a formulary?
Formulary is the list of prescription drugs a health plan covers, also called a drug list. Plans group drugs into cost tiers, and appearing on the list does not guarantee coverage, since a member's specific plan design may still leave certain drugs or categories out.
What determines whether a GLP-1 is on the formulary?
Whether a GLP-1 drug like Zepbound or Wegovy is on a formulary depends on the plan. UnitedHealthcare's prescription drug list, also called a formulary, sorts drugs into tiers, and the cost of each tier is decided by the member's employer or health plan [4]. Cigna's own drug list warns that not all plans cover prescription weight-management medications and tells members to check their plan details [3].
How do formulary tiers change what a GLP-1 costs?
Formularies group drugs into cost tiers instead of one flat price.
