What is orforglipron?
Orforglipron is a GLP-1 receptor agonist taken as a once-daily oral tablet, rather than an injection, that binds to and activates the human GLP-1 receptor. It's FDA-approved under the brand name Foundayo to reduce excess body weight in adults with obesity, or with overweight plus a weight-related condition.
How does orforglipron work?
Orforglipron is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that binds to and activates the human GLP-1 receptor [1]. Unlike other GLP-1 medicines such as liraglutide and dulaglutide, which are injected, orforglipron is taken as a tablet swallowed whole, without breaking, crushing, or chewing it [1].
What is orforglipron approved for?
Sold under the brand name Foundayo, orforglipron is indicated in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term in adults with obesity, or adults with overweight and at least one weight-related comorbid condition [1]. Concomitant use with another GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended [1]. It's also included on the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge list of drugs available to eligible Part D beneficiaries for a $50 monthly copay [2].
