Does Medicare cover GLP-1 medications?
Medicare Part D is the Medicare prescription drug benefit that has historically excluded GLP-1 medications used only for weight loss. It still covers GLP-1s prescribed for other approved uses, such as type 2 diabetes, and since July 1, 2026 also funds selected weight-loss GLP-1s through the separate Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program at a $50 monthly copay.
Why doesn't Medicare Part D cover GLP-1s for weight loss?
CMS has interpreted the Part D statute's exclusion of "agents when used for anorexia, weight loss, or weight gain" to mean anti-obesity medications are coverable only when prescribed for a medically accepted indication other than weight loss, such as type 2 diabetes [1]. That interpretation has applied since the Part D program began [1], so a plan can cover Zepbound or Wegovy for diabetes but not for weight management alone.
How does the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge change that?
Starting July 1, 2026, CMS's Medicare GLP-1 Bridge lets eligible Part D beneficiaries get Foundayo, Wegovy, or the Zepbound KwikPen for weight loss at a $50 monthly copay [3], with no part of that copay counting toward the Part D deductible or true out-of-pocket costs [2]. The demonstration runs through December 31, 2027 [2], and eligibility requires a BMI of 35 or higher, or a lower BMI with conditions such as uncontrolled hypertension or a previous stroke [3].
